Spirit returns to New Zealand

Norfolk Island to Auckland
15 March 2026

There is an old rumour that Norfolk Island was a place for the newlyweds and the almost deads. The truth, as we discovered, was so much better. We experienced wonderful scenery, zero crime, exceptionally friendly people, a strong sense of community, and a relaxed, commonsense way of life that reminded me of New Zealand about forty years ago — and in all the best ways.

Craig, Tyler, Curt, and Morgan were up early to fit in a drive around Kingston, visiting Quality Row, the ruined Barracks, and other remnants from the convict era. After that a trip to the Olive Café for an excellent breakfast. All agreed it was a remarkable place — rather like a subtropical Scotland. With stunning cliffs, farms and coastlines that also included a lovely sense of history, community and charm.

Back at the airport, many islanders came out to watch Spirit start her engines (aways interesting to watch) and wave her off, among them a great number of young children, which was especially lovely to see.

On departure, we were able to turn shortly after takeoff for a pass back over the airfield and then township before turning southeastward for New Zealand.

The flight seemed to take a little longer than expected. No doubt the strong headwinds had something to do with that, though perhaps anticipation also played its part. For some, this was a return home; for others, it was the chance to visit New Zealand for the first time.

Cape Reinga came into view through a gap in the clouds. Emotions were running high, particularly for Nige, who as project lead had invested so much of his energy and intension — especially through the Middle East and India — to keep this World Cruiser journey moving forward.

It was not long before we were descending into Auckland, right on time.

How wonderful to see Mark and Ainsley there to meet us, along with Jodi and representatives from a variety of New Zealand media. All of whom were shown through Spirit’s beautiful interior. Afterwards Mark gave an excellent speech thanking everyone for their efforts and congratulating the wider team, all of whom have contributed in many ways to each stage of the journey that had brought Spirit to New Zealand. He spoke in particular of Nige’s tireless work as project manager in driving matters forward to this milestone, and also of our excellent film director Gregory, who is now the only person who has been on every single leg of Spirit’s journey so far.

Well done to everyone involved — both those present, and those present in Spirit.
